(COOK COUNTY) — Progressive reformer and Democratic candidate for Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court, Jacob Meister has issued the following statement in response to Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown’s request to the Cook County Board for an extra $8 million for the office:
“This week Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown appeared before the Cook County Board of Commissioners to plea for more money for the Clerk’s office. The Clerk’s office is in dire need of more resources to increase its capacity to serve the public. However, indicative of the backward thinking that has plagued this office for decades, Clerk Brown recommended selling wall calendars as a funding source to modernize and staff the office.
“Since Dorthy was elected, the Clerk of the Court’s office has been ground zero for corruption, fraud, and waste in Cook County government. The incumbent Clerk, promised sweeping changes to the system in 2008, 2012 & 2016. Millions of taxpayer dollars later, the Clerk’s office is in worse shape than ever. Today’s suggestion that the Cook County Board fund much needed improvements to this office by selling wall calendars is ludicrous. Clerk Brown might as well have suggested a bake sale as a way to fund the office. Why should the County Board have confidence that she will spend an extra 8 million dollars diligently?
“If I am elected, I will audit the office from top to bottom to ensure that the misuse and misdirection of funds are addressed first. On day one I will be ready to move away from the ideas and practices of the past and move the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court’s office into the 21st Century. We must create a modern system that will facilitate collaboration and communication with other agencies in the county and ensure that all litigants have equal access to justice in our system.”
